About Us

Rotary club of Behala is one of the oldest clubs in the District 3290. Chartered on August 24, 1964 our membership generally varies between 40 and 50. We meet every Thursday at 6:30 PM at M.P. Birla Planetarium, Seminar Hall, 96, J.L. Nehru Road, Calcutta 700071. The Club's "Mantra" is Service but the thread that binds the members together is Fellowship.

History
In the month of August 1963, the then District Governor Rtn. Hemen Ganguly of R.I. District 325 appointed Past President Rtn. Mihir Roy of Rotary Club of South West Calcutta as his special representative for extension of Rotary Club of Behala, and Budge Budge. Rtn. Mihir Roy commenced survey of Behala area on November 6, 1963, it was completed by November 17, 1963 and thereafter the survey report was sent to the District Governor.

In December, 1963 Rtn. President Dr. Ranjan Banerjee of Rotary Club of South West Calcutta formed an extension committee with Rtn. Mihir Roy as Chairman and Rtn. Asoke Roy and Rtn. H. S. Sinha as members to go into the details for the formation of Rotary Club of Behala.

Rotary Club of South West Calcutta released the territory of the proposed Rotary Club of Behala on February 13, 1964. A month later on March 13, 1964 District Governor Rtn. Hemen Ganguly gave permission to Rtn. Mihir Roy to organize the said club with the territorial limit of former South Suburban Municipality with a population of 2 lakhs.

On April 1, 1964 the organizational meeting was held at the residence of Rtn. Sailendra Nath Roy, where the prospective members were explained the objects of Rotary, its obligations and privileges. In that meeting the office bearers were selected, and the constitution and by - laws were adopted. Names of the selected office bearers were:

The inaugural meeting of the provisional Rotary Club of Behala was held on April 11, 1964. 37 members were present in the meeting. In addition to above 9 office bearers names of the other 28 members present were:

The Charter dated August 24, 1964 was presented on Saturday September 26, 1964 by the then District Governor Rtn. C. R. Bose of RI District 325. Immediate Past District Governor Rtn. Hemen Ganguly was the Chief Guest of the ceremony. Dignitaries who graced the occasion with their presence included RI Counsellor and Past District Governor Rtn. Saral Deb, RI Fiscal Agent and Past District Governor Rtn. G. Basu, Past President and District Governor's Special Representative Rtn. Mihir Roy, American Vice Consul Mr. Willium B. Harris, Sheriff of Calcutta Rtn. Mohan Mukherjee, and Chairman of South Suburban Municipality Mr. Indra Nath Mukherjee.
